We are all responsible for the environment. For sustainability measures to be effective that means communicating with the crew and supporting them in their roles with education, resources and the time to learn how they can play their part.
Starting the day with a karakia is a wonderful way to set a tone for the day and common intention.
For those not fluent in te reo Māori, a karakia can also be done in your chosen language. The important thing is to take a moment to acknowledge each other, the space you are in, and the whenua (land) you are on.
We have provided here for you a commonly used karakia which wonderfully reflects our relationship with both the whenua and each other.
Tūtawa mai i runga
Tūtawa mai i raro
Tūtawa mai i roto
Tūtawa mai i waho
Kia tau ai
Te mauri tū
Te mauri ora
Ki te katoa
Haumi ē! Hui ē!
Taiki ē!

Come forth from above,
below,
within,
and from the environment
Vitality
and well being,
for all
Strengthened in unity.
[everyone joins in saying Taiki ē]
Including a clause in your contracts referring to your environmental policy shows that you are serious about sustainability on your production, and communicates your expectations to the team.
The clauses here are examples only, provided kindly by Sinclair Black, and are here to be adapted and used in your contracts as per the specific requirements of your production.
You warrant and undertake to comply to the best of your ability with all current codes of industry best practice and sustainability policies, and in particular will familiarise yourself and comply with our sustainability policy. Both parties agree to comply with the provisions of this policy in undertaking their obligations set out in this Agreement.
The parties to this agreement confirm they will familiarise themselves with all current codes of industry best practice and sustainability policies, including the Greenlit sustainability policy, and will use their best endeavours to abide by such policies.
The crew sustainability agreement can be included in a crew onboarding pack. It ensures that your crew are aware of your sustainability practices as detailed in your Sustainability Action Plan.
The template should be adapted to reflect the unique needs of your production.
Greenlit provides an inbuilt onboarding form within the carbon calculator, however if you would like to collect data independently then this form may be of use to you.
